  Located on the southeast China coast, Taiwan is the best island, and it borders Pacific Ocean in the east, Ryukyu Islands in the northeast, Bashi Strait in the South, Fujian Province in the west. As a part of Chinese territory, Taiwan is the center of west Pacific Ocean sea-route, the main communication artery between China and other countries along the Pacific Ocean.

  Taiwan Strait runs from northeast to southwest, borders East Sea in the north, South Sea in the south. Taiwan Strait, 200 sea miles in length, 70 to 221 sea miles in width, is the main internatinal sea-route, as well as the main artery of China's sea-route. Many ships pass through Taiwan Strait, such as the ships from East China Sea to South China Sea, ships from Europe, Africa, South Asia and Oceania to China, from Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Persia Strait, the Indian Ocean to the Sea of Japan.

  Taiwan is totally 36,006 km from north to south, 44 km from east to west; the topography featured with mountains in the east, hills and platforms middle, and coast plains west respectively on 1/3; Taiwan Province is consisting of 3 islands: the Taiwan Islands, the Penghu Islands and the Diaoyu Islands; parting by mountains through north to south, descending from the middle part to two sides.

  Climatic Features: with Tropic of Cancer crossing the Island featured the tropical and subtropical climate with windy and rainy weather and high temperature; no cold winter or hot summer; seldom frost and snow; inshore typhoon centering around June to October in the southeast and November and December in the northeast

  Average Temperature: 20-25C annually; 13-20C in January and 24-29C in July

  Rainfall: average annual of 2,500mm; over 4,000 mm in northeast from December to the next March; around 3,000 mm in the hilly middle part in summer; less than the north from June to August in low and flat west and about 1,000 mm on the Penghu Islands.

  Taiwan Province is a beautiful island. It teems with rice, sugar and tea. There are more than 90 kinds of vegetables. Taiwan Province is also known as Kingdom of Fruits and the Natural Botanical Garden in Asia".

  52 percent of Taiwan Province is forest. The most famous are Tai Ping Mountain, Baxian Moutain, Ali Mountain. The total volume of lumber reached 3.26 hundred millions steres.There are about 4,000 kinds of trees. Taiwan fir, camphor and Nanmu are world-famous. The outputs of camphor and camphor oil amount to 70 per cent of the total ouput value in the world.

  Taiwan is surrounded by the sea, the total coastline is about 1,600 km. It is rich in fish and other natural resource.

  Taiwan has paid great attention to the development of industry sine 1960s. Now its industry is developing rapidly.

  According to statistics, Taiwan had a population of 21,816,000 until August, 1998. Most of the population are Han Nationality. There are many minorities in Taiwan, such as Amei, Yamei, Lukai and etc.

  The attractions in Taiwan Province are Riyue Pond, Ali Mountain, Yangming Mountain, Beitou Hot Spring, Beigang Mazu Temple, and etc.

  Xiamen City borders Taiwan Province. Thanks for the similar geography, climate, and custom, the people in Xiamen and Taiwanese has a close and friendly relationship.
