I'm not sure which day it was when I said "let's go home," and found that I meant going back to Xiamen. Nor am I sure which day it was that Xiamen started to get more and more open-minded and tolerant. Locals have learned to adapt themselves and speak Mandarin; most no longer discriminate against those from remote villages and poor areas.

I work at Xiamen Luneng Power as a maintaining staff of electrical meters. Every day the water gauge tells me how many hundreds of tons of waste we have recycled. I knew what I jot down is not just a number we have to report to the supervisor. When I am calibrating the instruments monitoring the ash and gases pouring from our factory chimney, I know what I do is not just passing the inspections by the Environmental Protection Bureau. I have found that I have fallen in love with my job, also this city.
Now in Xinglin where I live we have Ridong Park. It has a very bright name, "Sun-east," if translated literally into English. In evening all kinds of people gather there: old people and children, men and women, locals and outsiders. They jog, stroll, play badminton, or just sit on the grass chatting or reading. In the near future Xinglin will also see the completion of a speedy light railway to Xiamen Island, the modern West Railway Station, the Garden Expo Park and Jimei University City.
It's amazing that if I leave my new home for more than two days, wherever I go, I am eager to come back. As an old saying goes, home is where the heart is. The magic of a city should not only be in its landscape, but also in the warm people living there and the things happening around you. I'm sure that in future Xiamen will be the proud home of even more people. |
