An exhibition of Lin Yi’s works opened at Xiamen’s Nihao Art Contemporary Museum on February 24th. The talented young artist, a graduate of and now teacher at Jimei University Art College, presented 22 works at the show.
The works on display were compiled over a three-month period and finished by March 2007. They primarily depict Western cartoon characters against a background of figures reminiscent of traditional Chinese paper-cutting art. He uses images that many people -- young, old, Chinese, foreigners -- are familiar with in order to reach a wide audience. The cartoon characters make the Chinese figures appear less solemn. He avoids the stiff, academic approach that often alienates people so that professionals and amateurs alike can appreciate his paintings. Another of Mr. Lin’s intentions is to allow for multiple readings of his work without pre-determining any specific end result.
Born in 1982, Mr. Lin knows Western cartoon characters well. He is also fond of traditional Chinese arts such paper-cutting. Placing the cartoon characters in the foreground demonstrates the increasingly powerful influence Western lifestyle has on the younger generation in China today. He appeals to this generation to be aware of and protect Chinese traditional art, which he fears may have passed its prime.
Mr. Lin’s art is about confrontation, with the contrasting images in his paintings underlining the confrontation of contradictory cultures. “大 PK” or confrontation is ever-present in his works.
Mr. Lin’s connections to contemporary art date back to 2002. He describes himself as a young, experimental artist still exploring art. In his spare time he works on art production, enjoys agricultural produce markets, and loves cooking. He finds a metaphor for his art in cooking, where he conjures up new dishes.
The fresh-faced artist says he doesn’t want to be restricted in his work. He is presently preparing his next exhibition of lighter works, focuses on androgynous figures.
Asked where he sees himself in ten years, Mr. Lin hopes he will still be a professional artist with freedom in creating his work. He would also like to spend some time in Europe to increase his professional experience.(xiamen net)
