The 2017 International Blue Carbon Forum was held in Xiamen on November 4th.
As one of the sub-forums of the 2017 World Ocean Week in Xiamen, the theme of the forum was “Blue Carbon Development: Technology and Responsibility”.
Zhang Zhanhai, director of the Department of Strategic Planning and Economic Development at the State Oceanic Administration, Professor Carlos Duarte of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and Professor Jiao Nianzhi of Xiamen University delivered keynote speeches at the forum.
In addition, some sixteen experts and researchers in the fields of blue carbon and climatic change from China, the United States, Australia, Canada, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, made reports on the status quo and trend of blue carbon development, basic sciences and technology of blue carbon, ways and methods of increasing blue carbon sinks, as well as blue carbon policies and international cooperation.
More than 180 participants attended the forum, the largest academic activity of its kind in China.
The forum was sponsored by the Department of Strategic Planning and Economic Development at the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) and organized by the Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Ocean and Fisheries , the SOA’s Third Institute of Oceanography, Zhejiang University and Conservation International.
