When we decide to do something, we do it quickly.
When there is a crisis, that's when some are interested in getting out and that's when we are interested in getting in.
Bringing new meaning to the saying "You can never be too rich or too slim," the world reportedly has a new richest man - Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim. With a total fortune of around USD 67.84 billion, Carlos Slim overtook Microsoft Corp. founder Bill Gates, who has 59.2 billion dollars, the respected Mexican financial website Sentido Comun said last Tuesday.
Tops Gates by USD 8.6 billion
A 27 percent surge from March to June in the share price of America Movil, Latin America's largest cell phone operator controlled by Slim, made him close to USD 8.6 billion wealthier than Gates, indicated the website.
In 2006, Slim earned an estimated USD 2.2 million per hour. In April this year, Forbes magazine reported that Slim had overtaken billionaire investor Warren Buffett to take the No. 2 spot in the world's richest stakes but was still behind Gates.
Three months ago, Sentido Comun's founder and editor-in-chief Eduardo Garcia begged to differ with Forbes and calculated Slim's wealth as more than Gates' — but only by a whisker. Now he says there is no doubt whose fortune is bigger at current share values.
Controversial figure
Mexico has a huge rich-poor divide, with a tiny elite holding most of the country's wealth and around half the population living on less than USD 5 a day. Slim is a controversial figure in Mexico.
The magnate's rising fortune has caused a good deal of controversy because it has been amassed in a nation where per-capita income is less than USD 6,800 a year and half the population lives in poverty. Critics claim he is a monopolist, pointing to Telmex's control of 90% of the Mexican landline telephone market. Slim's wealth is the equivalent of roughly 8% of Mexico's annual GDP. If Gates had a similar proportion in the U.S., his fortune would have to grow to more than USD 13 trillion, 17 times his current wealth, according to Sentido Comun. |
