On May 17th 2014 Vice-Dean Robert Tzou of the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri visited XMUT and was warmly received by XMUT President Chen Wenzhe. During the visit the two parties discussed many areas of cooperation, including introduction of new joint courses and teacher exchange projects. The main fields for joint projects include electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, construction, and civil engineering. Arrangements were also made for high-level international experts to visit XMUT both to teach and to conduct research.
Professor Tzou delivered a discourse on international developments within the academic field of engineering. He touched on a number of recent trends in the field, and also discussed ways to overcome the differences between Chinese and international teaching methods so as to benefit teachers and students alike.
Prior to this, on April 22nd, XMUT President Chen Wenzhe had led a delegation on a very productive visit to the University of Missouri. Again, the focus of discussions were joint projects and academic exchanges, including an application to the Chinese Ministry of Education to a joint XMUT–University of Missouri Institute of Engineering in Xiamen. It was also agreed to initiate an “XMUT-MU Academic Exchange Month”, incorporating a range of activities. In addition, researchers were encouraged to apply for funding for joint research projects, and the framework for technology transfer was discussed, as well as how research can respond to the needs of industry.
The strengthening of academic exchange arrangements was marked by the inauguration of “XMUT-MU Exchange Month”. In the future, MU will send both faculty and students to Xiamen, while XMUT students and faculty will benefit from opportunities to visit Missouri for training and research.
